Sweetman 'disappointed' after Holyport FC dumped out of Challenge Cup by Risborough Rangers

Derek Sweetman (above) says he felt disappointed after Holyport FC’s 4-2 defeat to Risborough Rangers dumped them out of the Bluefin Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.

Port were guilty of giving Rangers ‘too much respect’ in the first half as the away side held a three goal advantage at the break with goals from Souire-Adams, Sethi and Clark.

It took until the 61st minute for Sweetman’s side to get off the mark with Johnny Feaver able to turn in a low driven cross at the back post.

Risborough’s Wyllie restored the visitors’ three goal lead with 15 minutes to play and despite Gus Burton halving the deficit in the 82nd minute, it was too late for Port to mount any chance of a comeback.

“We gave them far too much respect in the first half and allowed them to dictate the game,” admitted Sweetman.

“They’re a very well organised side with some very good players. We played a poor first half of football but I did feel in the second we were better and might have been able to sneak something out of the game at one point. But unfortunately it didn’t work out that way.

“We rested four or five players so it wasn’t our strongest XI. They’re (Risborough Rangers) a very good side and whatever side they were going to put out would have been difficult to play against to be honest.”

“It’s disappointing because we don’t like to lose but we’re looking at the bigger picture,” added Sweetman. “We’re focused on trying to secure one of the spots in the top four for the end of the season.”
