Advertiser photographer nominated for Regional Press Award

Advertiser photographer Ian Longthorne has been nominated in the photography category at the Regional Press Awards for the third consecutive year.

The snapper, 46, who has worked at the paper for seven years, will hope his three submitted photos earn him the prestigious award.

He selected a photo of Councillor Phill Bicknell, the Queen, and a rugby game as his submissions.

Ian said: “It’s really nice to have been nominated.

“It shows that at a time when a lot of photographers across Berkshire have lost their jobs, Baylis Media still values theirs.”

The photo of Conservative Cllr Bicknell was taken during the elections in 2015, when the Tories found out they had won a majority both in the Royal Borough and nationally, showing him amidst jubilant scenes.

His shot of the Queen shows her smiling in her private gardens, which Ian believes makes the photo ‘more candid’.

Lastly, the photo of the Windsor Boys' School rugby game was taken during a match put on in memory of a former pupil who died while working as a club promoter in Ibiza.

He selected the photos with the help of his chief photographer, Matthew Phillips and assistant editor Nicola Hine.

“It’s always hard to be objective when you look at your own photos,” he explained.

“I made a shortlist of the ones I liked, and they helped me choose the best ones.”

When Ian attended last year’s awards, the catering team accidentally burned their food, and the smoke caused the hotel to be evacuated.

The guests went to drink champagne at a nearby hotel before returning to their awards do when the smoke had cleared.

He added: “I’m looking forward to it, but it’s always a bit nerve racking.”
