Mayor from down under takes a stroll on the Queen's Walkway

The Gold Coast is getting a walkway of its own, also being produced by the trust, which hopes to install one in all of the Commonwealth nations and territories before the next Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Cllr Tate was presented with the final marker for his walkway outside the Henry VIII Gate of Windsor Castle.

The mayor has visited Windsor before and told the Express it was good to be back, adding: “Nothing’s changed.”

After the presentation the guests enjoyed a tour of the Royal Mews and had lunch at the Duchess of Cambridge pub, where the mayor, who used to run a brewery, pulled a pint.

They went to see the Hawker Hurricane in Alexandra Gardens, had an ice cream and fed the swans.

They also went to evensong at St George’s Chapel, the Guildhall for a tour and a chance to sit in the Royal Borough’s mayor’s chair, then enjoyed dinner at Coworth Park.

Cllr Tate presented the Governor of Windsor Castle, Admiral Sir James Perowne, with a set of cufflinks as a thank you for the trip.

Outdoor Trust director Jim Walker said: “We are delighted that Mayor Tate will now be able to complete his walkway, inspiring other city mayors to follow too, and that the Queen’s Walkway in Windsor will therefore soon be part of this wider Commonwealth walkway network.”

Of the visit, he said: “It was really good. I think they were bowled over.

“As he [Cllr Tate] said, it’s just great to see there are so many points of interest within a few metres of each other.”

The 6.32km walkway is set to celebrate the Queen hopefully becoming Britain’s longest-reigning monarch in September.
